Tech house began in the early-1990s British underground not as a shop shelf but as a way of DJing: speed up a garage dub, slow down techno, keep house swing, a muscular low end and as little ornamental chatter as possible. Eddie Richards, Mr C, Terry Francis, Nathan Coles and the Wiggle parties helped the sound acquire a name. At its best, it balances human groove with machine economy. At its worst, it is a two-hour loop that regards itself as Ibiza property. The clip is now often longer than the idea, although the bass still enters without queuing.
