Deep house emerged from mid-1980s Chicago when Larry Heard and like-minded producers proved that four beats to the bar could do more than command: they could empathise. Warm pads, minor chords, supple bass, jazz-inflected keys, soul vocals and an unhurried groove made house “deep” in feeling rather than subwoofer depth.
