In neurofunk, the bass does not roar so much as conduct a difficult meeting between a reactor, a predator and a failing server. The style split from techstep around the end of the 1990s through Ed Rush & Optical: less hammering, dense synthetic drums, constantly modulating bass timbres, clipped sci-fi signals and a groove that remains funky beneath all the armor. The tempo remains fast-usually around 170 BPM-but feels like a managed fall through a very expensive machine. Later neuro became heavier and more spectacular without abandoning dystopia or inhuman precision. This is funk after humanity cancelled but left someone responsible for locking up.
