Jungle

Jungle emerged in early-1990s Britain when breakbeat hardcore collided with Jamaican sound-system culture and nobody called the police. Accelerated Amen and other breaks scatter sparks above sub-bass inherited from dub and dancehall; ragga voices, hip-hop fragments, sirens and pirate-radio ghosts fly overhead. It is not merely “old drum & bass”. Jungle prizes collage, rhythmic risk, MCs and the collective fever of the rave. Its future was assembled from stolen seconds of the past - and has proved sturdier than most new-build developments.
