Electro crystallised in the early 1980s when Bronx hip-hop, funk, Kraftwerk and the Roland TR-808 met in Planet Rock by Afrika Bambaataa & the Soulsonic Force. A broken machine beat, syncopated bass, vocoder, rap and cosmic synthesis gave b-boy culture its own robotic engine. Cybotron, Hashim, Newcleus and Egyptian Lover developed the sound across New York, Detroit, Los Angeles and Miami. This is electro without “house” after it: the kick does not march on four beats but dances in a break. Robots can funk.
